Co-operative Society)

| Objective of the society
| To promote economic and social betterment of its members people through thrift, self-help and mutual aid in accordance with the principles of cooperation as enunciated in Section 3 of the ACT.

| Approach
| Mahila Margadarshi promoting a Taruni Mutual Aided Cooperative Society Ltd with urban slum dwellers for their enlistment, the society starts with 65 women from marginalized families members and permanent residents in srikakulam municipality
The society initiated in the month of April 2005 and registered under MACS Act at Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Srikakulam on 17 th June 2005
Every member has involved with a share capital and a regular monthly thrift amount Rs. 30/- to 50/-
It is capacitating the women members through providing skill development trainings for income generation, number of members involved in the trainings in tailoring, embroidery, Tie and Dye and jute bags making etc and set up their own income generating activity with small loans taking from the Taruni MACS

| Activities
|
- Encourage and afford all facilities for cultivating the habit of savings and thrift among its members.
- Formulate and implement relief, benevolent, mutual aid and welfare schemes for the economic and social betterment of the members/people.
- Offering financial and development counseling and implement necessary credit, non-credit and development projects / programmes for the overall welfare and development of the members and people.
- Liaise with related agencies such as Government, regulatory authorities, financial institutions, banks, local, national and international development agencies, federal cooperatives, local bodies, corporate bodies, charitable institutions etc for obtaining any benefit or for promoting the interests of the members and the Cooperative Society, subject to the provisions of the related laws.
- Lobby for more supportive legislation and Government policy and public support for augmenting the interest of the cooperative movement.
- Promote the concept of thrift and credit as an integral component of community development programme and assist in promotion of viable, sustainable thrift and credit societies for interested and needy people and wherever possible.
- Prepare websites and / or publish and distribute educational, training, management and development material like books, leaflets, pamphlets, paper ads and other reading material.
- Prepare projects for overall development of the people especially for women development and approach to local, national and international organization for getting funds / grants to do the development activities.
- Enter into arrangements with any Government, State, Municipal, Panchayat, local or any other authority and/or with any local, national and international development agencies and to obtain any benefit for the members of the society/for the people.
- Subscribe or contribute or otherwise to assist or to guarantee money to charitable, educational, health, benevolent, scientific, cultural and public utility institutions or such objects and purposes having relation to the development and welfare of members and the society.
- Collaborate with cooperative, financial and development organizations in financial and technical terms and promote subsidiary or new organizations.
- Raise money from the members, people and donors through fees, subscriptions, donations, contributions, subsidies, grants, share capital, thrift and other types of deposits etc,
- Organize or otherwise arrange for pension, insurance and health services to the members and provide development and other services to the people.
- Hold necessary infrastructure and programmes to provide all required services for providing or enhancement of livelihood, employment, productivity, income and for improving the quality of life especially in health, shelter, education of members.
- Make arrangements for capacity building training for members and people to identifying and salvation of local problems and given support to skill development and income generating trainings.
- Receive grants, donations, deposits, borrowings and other contributions from the Government / Government agencies, banks, other financial institutions, cooperatives, corporate bodies, development agencies and individuals for general, as well as specific purposes.
- Undertake any other activity which is incidental and essential for attainment of its aim.

| The Organization filed 5 cases directly in the court and got judgments, many number of cases referred to the Protection Officer for filing the cases in the court
Organizing trainings and awareness campaigns to women for understanding the Act and organized legal literacy programmes with District Legal Services Authority and its magistrates in rural areas of Srikakulam district

| Outcome of the Project
| The campaign has given good message to the public with above activities, Small group discussions was organized in 36 wards in Srikakulam Municipality and 204 villages in panchayat elections with SHG, DWACRA and SHG women and leaders, women from SHGs shall take active parts in this programme. The participation of College youth in this programme has an advantage to create awareness among the people on usage of EVM because they are new to voting on municipal elections. People, who are participated in the meetings, asked about the problems to the contestants and then finalized their cost of vote. The TV and movie clippings also create awareness among the public for the right of vote and selection of candidates

| Mahila Margadarshi has taken up activities since year 2004 on Environment Protection with the support of Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. Meetings, seminars, workshops, trainings, rallies, small group discussions were taken up during the programme.

Target Area

The programmes focused on urban and rural areas and targeted to women (house wives), SHG members, farmers, students and general populations on solid waste management, electronic waste management, plastic waste management and preparation of bio-mass, preparation of bio-diversity registers and village bio-diversity plan etc.

Disaster Mitigation - Support to fire victims
|

| Mahila Margadarshi provided support to the fire accident victims in urban and rural areas through providing immediate relief what they actually need at that time.
The support is providing dress materials, food, utensils, study material to children organizing health camps, first aid etc on spot.
Under disaster mitigation, Mahila Margadarshi has undergone training through Government of India for a week days course on disaster management, valuable course from high profiled delegates was given more knowledge on disaster mitigation.

Stop Violence Against Women – Change Makers Mobilization

Mahila Margadarshi working together with OXFAM (I) Trust and Centre for World Solidarity on issues Violence Against Women in Srikakulam district through as a member NGO in Andhra Pradesh Women's Network since year 2004.

Women Empowerment and HIV & AIDS

|
Mahila Margadarshi received a support through fellowship from Centre for World Solidarity to working on Women Empowerment and HIV & AIDS.
The organization working in 5 villages in Ranasthalam and 5 Villages in Etcherla mandal, worked on capacitating VOs, SHGs, Youth Groups, MS, Village Leaders and Village Elders on Gender issues and Gender based violence.
Preparation of village and cluster issue committees and capacitate the members through trainings and advises. The issues raised with violence in those villages will first discussed in the issue committees.
Family visits held in those villages and providing regular health services and organizing health awareness discussions with the people, suspected HIV cases was referred to government VCCTCs and other health services has provided by the organization at free of cost

Centre for World Solidarity has providing a financial support to Mahila Margadarshi, srikakulam through Andhra Pradesh Women's Network for organizing a medical camp for Reproductive Track Infections. Mahila Margadarshi used the opportunity for organizing the medical camp at Badivanipeta village of Etcherla mandal in Srikakulam district.
Badivanipeta is a remote village which is situated in a distance of 25 Kms from Srikakulam town and having more vulnerable community i.e. marine fishers. The village has only one bus facility from the town, people of the village basing on fishing and the women was always doing fish vending. Sanitation is very poor due to ignorance and illiteracy, women will not concentrating on personal hygiene. The families were seasonally migrated from here to gujarath, kandla, Bombay , assam , veeraval etc for fishing and other works. The children working as child labour, those are went to fishing when they completed an age group of 12 years
Medical facilities was very poor to the village due to remote area, the nearest PHC is at Etcherla which is a distance of 19 Kms from the village, we find out very less visits by ANMs, the anganwadi worker was providing some medical facilities to the villagers, number of “sanchi doctors” (PMP practitioners) moving around the village daily. Hence, there is a severe need to provide medical support in Badivanipeta village
An awareness campaign (small group discussion) was organized with Doctors at the medical camp venue; the women actively involved and clarify their doubts with the doctors. The major questions raised by the participants regarding white discharge, anemia and then Ms. Lakshmi Kumari asked to lady doctor to explained about personnel hygiene, adding some important points regarding personal hygiene for adolescents
The RTI medical camp is organized at Badivanipeta village with the support of Centre for World Solidarity through Andhra Pradesh Women's Network was organized on 11 th March 2008 at 9.00 am with two doctors.

The total 205 cases 140 female and 65 male were screened and providing medicine from the camp. The doctors identified that the villagers facing severe anemia, adolescents also facing the same problem, there is one more identity that those are not taken nutritious food for their health. Only one girl goes to srikakulam for studying graduation from the entire village. The people have many myths and misconceptions regarding health issues were identified during the camp.
There is a severe need to provide regular medical facilities to the village and also create awareness regarding health issues like personal hygiene, village sanitation and drinking water, violence on women and also on livelihood activities. |

Capacity Building of Elected Women Representatives

| The Hunger Project and Mahila Margadarshi collaboratively working on capacity building of Elected Women Representatives in Panchayat raj in Sarubujjili, LN Peta, Srikakulam and Etcherla mandals in Srikakulam district.
Mahila Margadarshi organized Block Level Workshops in all four mandals before organizing Women's Leadership Workshops. The Block Level Workshops were focused on the concept of WLWs with involving all stake holders. An action plan was taken up during BLW from the EWRs for attending WLWs which were preplanned by the organization.
Each Woman's Leadership Workshop has organized with 25 to 35 woman participants focused on enhancing the leadership of woman at panchayat level, the module compiled with Social Citizenship and Political Citizenship of woman, 73 rd amendment in Panchayat raj Act, Gramasabha and its importance, Vision for a EWR and Planning for its implementation. The entire three days session was organizing in participatory method for easily understand and easily responding by the EWRs

Block Level Workshops

| The Block Level Workshops was organized at meetings halls of Mandal Parishad Offices at Sarubujjili, LN Peta, Etcherla and Srikakulam mandals.
The overall concept of the Block Level Workshops were focused the concept of the Capacity Building of EWRs. The BLWs were informed to all Sarpanches, woman ward members, woman MPTCs, ZPTC, Madal Parishad President (MPP), Mandal Parishad Development Officer, Mandal Revenue Officer and District Panchayat Officer, invite all of them to BLWs.
The BLW organized in one day, morning session focusing on the concept, need of woman's leadership and collecting the opinions of the other male representatives. The session is leaded by the MDO, MPP, Sarpanches and ward members and simultaneously taken up the opinions of EWRs and the evening session exclusively for preparation of action plan for find out the feasibility for attend the women's leadership workshops by the EWRs.

- EWRs come out with effective leadership from “I cannot” to “I can” and willing to participate in all meetings and grama sabhas in their area.
- All EWRs hike their confidence and personal growth levels towards their leadership and become sense of self-respect, dignity and have a confidence she become a good leader
- Understand the gender constraints, why women always looking as secondary citizen and their involvement towards mainstreaming gender. Setting aside societal inequities and stepping out as equal citizens
- Sense of solidarity amongst themselves towards deal the issues at panchayat level and district level
- Understand about the 73 rd constitutional amendment, and its provisions and how it was misused.
- Understand their roles and responsibilities and their right to ask the non-working government departments at village level.
- EWRs open up during the gender session, sharing the violence situations held in the family and society.

| Mahila Margadarshi has tie-up with Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty through its Mandal level agencies i.e. Mandal Mahila Samakhyas Ranasthalam, Etcherla and Mandasa on Implementation of Community Managed Sustainable Agriculture programme in 13 clusters of each five villages in the cluster in Ranasthalam, Etcherla, Mandasa mandals in Srikakulam district along with 6988 farmers in 23,621 Acres . The programme was implemented in 5 villages in Ranasthalam, 5 villages in Etcherla and 55 villages in Mandasa Mandals and working with 42 Village Organizations.
The programme implemented in Cashew, Paddy, Chilly, Green gram, Black gram, Ground Nut and Vegetables. The main objective of the programme is reducing application of chemical pesticides, chemical fertilizer and improves the cultivation through sustainable management practices i.e. summer ploughs, seed treatment, community flames, bird perches, alloys, boarder crops, inter crops and economy systems
The programme support goes to SHG member families in the area, the ultimate goal is to reduce cost of cultivation and at the same time provide chemical free food to the people.
The programme implemented through a 5 year road map to reach goals as prepare organic villages in the state

Strengthening of Water User Associations. |

The organization has tie up with Andhra Pradesh Community Based Tank Management Programme with District Project Unit; Srikakulam on August 2007 for strengthening the managing skills for Water User Associations through capacity building for effectively managed their minor irrigation tanks for their future livelihoods. The DPD, APCBTMP allotted 10 tanks with 1486.93 ha in Tekkali, Palasa, Nandigam, Saravakota, Ranasthalam and Kaviti mandals in Srikakulam district,
The major role of Mahila Margadarshi is to facilitate the implementation process at WUA level. It is right from the awareness generation to completion of the renovation and restoration of tanks. |

World Women's Day Celebrations |

Mahila Margadarshi and The Hunger Project collaboratively organized a fortnight event for create awareness among tribal women in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh on the occasion of World Women's day. The programme organized from 8 th March to 25 th March 2008 in 9 tribal blocks.
The programme is designed for tribal women with an objective to create an impact on cultural practices which are linked with violence. The programme create awareness on culture, rights, Acts and stop violence etc for improving an idea for quality of life.
The event was organized in 9 tribal blocks in Srikakulam district. It was started at Mandasa and continued through Meliaputti, Bhamini, Hiramandalam, Kottur, Saravakota, Palakonda, Pathapatnam and Sitampeta mandals and ended with a district event at Sitampet.. |
The common issues identified during the campaign: |
- Child marriages are more in tribal area, it shows the seriousness of Srikakulam in entire state and country.
- Lack of health facilities for tribal women causes deaths
- There is no proper anti natal and post natal care in the area
- Un avoidable mothers are more in the area due to cheated by non-tribe males
- Number of non-tribe families enjoying the lands etc.,
- Alcoholism is the major problem in tribal areas
- Bigamy and more than three families for tribal males
- Very less Women's leadership in the area
- Many tribal males come out as leaders in tribal area for the common issues like PESA act, tribal rights, land issues etc., but those are not given a priority to women.
- Lack of education facilities available for tribal girls
- Tribal girls hostels and schools having non-tribal male teachers and wardens causes many of the tribal girls cheated by the teachers and wardens, it is find out at least 4-8 cases in every month come out for news papers.
- Tribal girls affected for trafficking by tribes and non-tribes
- The HIV positive cases are more in the tribal area
- The deceases malaria and TB shows more impact on tribal families
- Very poor income sources for tribal families
- High number of single women in the families
- Transportation is the major problem for the tribal villages
- Very poor sanitation, don't have an awareness on personal hygiene
- There is no good drinking water facilities
- Naxalism was create violence always in tribal families
- Domestic violence cases are more in the area
- Girl children facing the sexual abuse with non-tribes and teachers
- There is no adolescent education in tribal villages
